Tour an Enertia home - a home that heats and cools itself and is making most of its own power as well. Enertia homes were declared a Modern Marvel in a 2007 ...
I've followed the enertia home for a few years. I just don't have the
capital to build one.
Many of you feel that 66/67 degrees is too cold. That's when you put on
the extra heat or layer on clothing. The heaters warmth will hold longer
so you don't have it running so long.
And, if you want it warmer you can have solar hot water around to take the
'edge' off the chill. There are systems available to run radiant (in the
floors) to keep your feet warm.
These houses are supposed to be fire resistant too. The thick wood is
difficult to keep burning so the damage is reduced.
I also like the various designs of these homes. I often look at the
website to see if there are any new models.
Can you imagine a vacation home in the cold hills? What heating costs
would you incur? Not much. My parents home is left at 45 degrees in the
winter and they received a 400 dollar electric bill. An unattended house
that keeps at an average of 66 degrees when not used and doesn't use power
to keep it warm?
Makes me think to have a smaller model built.
I've always been tempted by this concept but am unsure about New Hampshire
as a good spot for it. It has been unusually cold here in the Northeast
this year. I wonder if these homeowners in Ct would be willing to update
their experience now that we have been through the winter and are headed to
spring?
