yes they were/are MAIN engines; awesome! They had both of them running. LOUD! :-)

Oh no..... toxicity would've killed the crew in minutes! Vented to outside.....BUT, with the outside hatch open, the exhaust naturally vented itself back down into the boat for the first minute or so....

Oh no.... fresh/modern fuel. Fuel never lasts very long... a year at most???? It separates/breaks down w/ time.

I hate to say it but the germans built them better.Depth on these gato
class boats was only 300 feet.German subs like the U-505 could go down to
650 feet without imploding.But our subs were much more comfortable for the
crews and had much better food,toilets,fresh water showers etc.

At the end of WWII, Germany had the new model XXI boats coming out; depth to 900+ ft? Good thing for us they weren't out at the beginning of the war!

Actually Gato past 400 easy. Dad's sub in WW2 once went past 450 during depth charging. Balao boats could go to 600+.
