I'm thinking about doing the ball joints on my 97' E-150. The video makes it look pretty easy. I have the tools, and can borrow the press kit from Advance. I wonder if I can complete the job in one day or less? It looks like the only "hard part" is removing the steering knuckle and pressing the old ball joints out, and then the new ones back in. I'm a little nervous about getting stuck in the middle of the job.... What "can go wrong"?
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-8WV4fMFWdBQ/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAEA/bYiL7FXonRc/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Mike McCulloch Good deal! P.S.- The hunt was amazing but Mr Murphy did show up a time or two...lol

+Glenn R. In a friends truck, after full reassembly,it was noted that the ball joint stud spindle was spinning in the knuckle when turning the wheel. Not tight enough, this will fail the ball joint stud and break it.Note the enclosed part warnings against fretted or worn tapers in the steering knuckle. He was able to tighten it properly later. Also follow the sequence of installing the proper ball joint ,it was top or bottom first,or you cannot put the other one in!
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Xl2hZMH7Y2Q/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAQU/tAIbimJM6K8/photo.jpg?sz=64
Thanks Doc,I ended up calling around and found a place that only wants $90 per side for labor, which sounds great to me.  The 1st shop wanted $475 parts, labor, & alignment, which made me consider DIY.  So, now I don't have to worry about Mr. Murphy (he can be an SOB sometimes!)Btw, I picked up the ball joints from Rock Auto for $28, instead of $18 each from Advance or NAPA.Thanks again for the great videos. Good luck on the hunt.  Hope you fill the freezer.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-8WV4fMFWdBQ/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAEA/bYiL7FXonRc/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Glenn R well we have all heard Murphy's law. Hahahaha. I would say I'm here for you if you run into a snag but unfortunately I'll be hunting in a remote location for the next week. Good luck!

Tighten the caliper mounting bolts to 195 foot pounds? My Haynes manual says 22-27 foot pounds for a 1999 E-150. What am I missing? BTW thanks for the video I just completed the same job and it was a big help although I used the Auto Zone brand ball joints so I have my fingers crossed... Oh and I lived in Anchorage for 3 years when I was stationed at Ft. Rich, loved it there.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-8WV4fMFWdBQ/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAEA/bYiL7FXonRc/photo.jpg?sz=64
Good question. I try to put it in the middle to account for any deviation in the actual tool.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-qWxPa6RcBy4/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAABA8/d6Qgg4-1Vak/photo.jpg?sz=64
+The Car Doctor Ahh, makes sense. Other question for ya. When a manual gives a torque range such as 51-75 Ft pounds, what do you torque to?
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-8WV4fMFWdBQ/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAEA/bYiL7FXonRc/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Steve Stevens I believe I was referring to the caliper mounting bracket to knuckle bolts.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-NMkYnCvCoCE/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAOgE/Ir1WPA7Waug/photo.jpg?sz=64
Hey Tim, great job... your videos are awesome! Hopefully a quick question for ya. I replaced the ball joints (upper and lower) on the 1994 E-150 about 20K miles ago and when I recently took it in for an alignment they are telling me that the upper ball joint is bad. Is this possible in such a short amount of time? When I get the van back from them today I'm going to give it the shake test and if I do need to replace the ball joints I'll also be replacing the tie rods as well. Oh and when I did the ball joints 20K ago I also did the inner and outer wheel bearings on both sides. Thanks in advance! :-)
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-8WV4fMFWdBQ/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAEA/bYiL7FXonRc/photo.jpg?sz=64
Glad to assist and hear that all ended well. Take care!
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-NMkYnCvCoCE/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAOgE/Ir1WPA7Waug/photo.jpg?sz=64
+The Car Doctor Well the install went great and I have awesome stopping power now! :-) My van is a 1994 E150 Club Wagon Chateau, so the disassembly was a bit different (no caliper mounting bracket, it was bolted directly to the arm that contained the ball joints). Just wanted to give you a huge thanks Tim. Your video and subsequent answers to my questions helped immensely. Thumbs up my friend! :-)
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-9s1yO4FCcMQ/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAGg/SKA6kLpyK8Y/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Tom Persons Yes.Had an inner tie rod go out in a newly rebuilt rack and pinion assembly.Noisy and clunky, less that 20 thousand miles and with some lube in the new bellows boots.Moog only or better from now on.See the inner tie rods for what is it $8.35 in Rock Auto?Even Dodge had a recall on dangerous and defective ball joints in Dodge Dakota or the like.Airlines call these cheap parts counterfit, parts stores just call them economy. And cheap tools are just that, but some have gotten better.(the tools)
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-8WV4fMFWdBQ/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAEA/bYiL7FXonRc/photo.jpg?sz=64
Most rotors come with (bearing races) already installed so if the replacement bearing comes with you wont need. And yes, you won't need to remove the seal by using the nut on the spindle method since your replacing everything. Sounds like you got it figured out. Good luck with everything! Take care.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-NMkYnCvCoCE/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAOgE/Ir1WPA7Waug/photo.jpg?sz=64
+The Car Doctor I just watched the video again and answered the question about the seals... so I'll be buying some new seals! I also see the sleeve on the outer bearing.... but my inner bearings came new with a sleeve as well.... won't fit in the back of the hub with that sleeve so I assume it's safe to chuck it out? Oh and in the video you removed the old wheel bearing and seal by putting the nut back on the axle and yanking out and down on the old rotor. Since I have all new rotors, bearings and seals I probably can just skip that step.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-NMkYnCvCoCE/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAOgE/Ir1WPA7Waug/photo.jpg?sz=64
+The Car Doctor Yes... thanks Tim! I found a bearing driver and grease press at Harbour Freight at a decent price. I also have another couple questions for you. I just received my new ball joints, rotors and wheel bearings. I assume I reuse the bearing seals from the old rotors? Or would you recommend buying new ones? Also, my wheel bearings came with a metal sleeve around them that I didn't see in your video. I assume that's to protect the bearings while in the box and not part of the install, right?
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-8WV4fMFWdBQ/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAEA/bYiL7FXonRc/photo.jpg?sz=64
Well the seal driver I use is a blue point kit I got off the snapon truck. But that's just for driving the seal. The grease press is a handy tool for greasing the bearings but you can do this by hand if needed. I'm sure there are videos showing this process. I also used a seal remover tool to pry out the old seal in order to remove the bearings from the rotor hub. I think that's what you were asking about but if not let me know. Good luck!
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-NMkYnCvCoCE/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAOgE/Ir1WPA7Waug/photo.jpg?sz=64
+The Car Doctor Thanks Tim.... I think I used Duralast for the uppers and Valuecraft for the lowers (what I could find at AutoZone). I'm going to find a local Moog vendor this time. Also, I need to replace my rotors as well. What brand do you recommend? Oh and where did you get the wheel bearing hammer press? Last time I did my vans (1994 E150) wheel bearings I took the rotors to a machine shop and they charged me $10 a rotor to remove the old ones and put in the new ones. I didn't know the tool you used exists! :-)
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-8WV4fMFWdBQ/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAEA/bYiL7FXonRc/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Tom Persons Well I hate to say it but I have seen that with low quality parts being used. Just make sure the studs are properly torqued and it isn't just a problem with the original install and they just need torqued properly. Also if that is the case make sure there isn't a problem with the actual arm or knuckle causing the play. If the movement is in the joint itself then consider using a quality part like Moog. Good luck and thanks for dropping by!

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-7ylpV8WuDyo/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAARs/-1L353ZVMPQ/photo.jpg?sz=64
I drove a 1998 15 Passenger van for our church many times filled with primarily either kids or teens. I had no special license or anything. I simply looked at the vehicle and concluded without even really thinking about it that it can't be driven like a sports car. I mean Duh!! I quickly got a feel for the van and simply didn't dare take any unnecessary maneuvers with it. Slow down, take your time and be careful with them and you'll be fine. Keep your passengers safe. If you have to swerve that quickly out of the way as in the video then your not being vigilant enough as a driver or keeping a good stopping distance. You can avoid most of those sudden situations if you remain vigilant and always consider the worst thing that could possibly happen under any given driving situation.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-UXpgQRJuCKk/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAR4/w4mozosIqy0/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Mr. Extreme Totally agreed loaded van / suv / truck is not a sedan it could weight 4+ tons and should not be driven as sport car. Each person is about 100 kilograms so 15 people make 1500kg = ~1.5 tons with seats and their luggage load could be about ~2+ tons to the car that already weight ~2 tons = 4+ tons total weight. This suspension they offer does not chance center of gravity either, so i'd like to know what it does exactly however, this video gives no clue on how this "roadmaster" suspension operates what it actually does versus standard one.Could be marketing trick like in "as seen on tv" they put something higher in the van to raise center of gravity and make to make video without it look worse, at best it adds 10% improvement.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-9q5FJXzl1DI/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAB8/RPVRuCbGOl0/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Mr. Extreme -Agreed. I drove one of these on a college trip to DC when one of the teachers got sick and couldn't attend. Frankly the initial thought of driving something this big scared me. It wouldn't brake as fast as my car, certainly wouldn't corner in a pinch. I realized that the only way I could handle this massive vehicle was to SLOW THE HECK DOWN AND GIVE PROPER BRAKING DISTANCE.Fortunately, no college students were harmed in the making of this post.

Unfortunately you did a number of things at once, it would have been more informative if you could have tested the HC after each fix to best determine what solved the problem. It may have been the vacuum hoses alone.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-W8h2Z0H6Zhg/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAByk/aHOWEdAI-ZY/photo.jpg?sz=64
Been there and I get that.  I'm trying to resolve high HC in my 82 motorhome, I've not found any serious vacuum hose failures (yet)
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-J_R0Dt8Rsc4/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAABk/NGMAHCBdYFo/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Jamie Clay Well the point was to get it through inspection and pass which I did. I'm sure the vacuum leaks were predominantly to blame however I wasn't driving and hour both ways to the inspection station after doing one thing, failing, and trying aqain. lmao It wasn't an experiment I have a job and needed to have a vehicle legal to get me there. Thanks for your input though, all opinions are welcome. I simply created the vid to help other less fortunate peeps get their drive on. :)

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
+handy man Thanks for getting back to me so fast. Basically, I paid a ton of money to a rip off mechanic that got me for a few grand and didnt actually fix the real problem. Also my business is dying rite now. So, now im just selling my silverado because my business failed, and I am out of money. I want to buy one of these and fix it up a little as an RV and live in it for awhile so I can get my business back on track. What do I wanna be looking for? I see these for sale all of the time on Craigslist. I do hear a lot of positive reviews about these vans going into 2 and 300k miles and still running good. I just dont have much money left, so I am definitely buying one on a small budget. Do you have any thoughts you could share about this? thanks!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-eNC2J6qBuRw/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAL4/cgSTkWp_qP0/photo.jpg?sz=64
the problem is the stock ball joints are smooth and most replacements that I've seen are grooved like splines Plus powder coated which makes them just big enough that they fight going back in the holes. I have found that if you take a wire wheel and get the powder coating off and then grease both the ball joint and the hole they go in much easier. I've spent 14 hours trying to change one side on an f250 4x4, so I feel your pain.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
