It's always a pleasure to watch your videos. Today, I have another
question. But first, my story...
A few years ago, in an effort to start rebuilding my credit, I put down
$2000 for a secured credit card through Capital One. Since then, I've been
able to obtain cards through other banks, and my credit scores have
improved quite a bit. Today, I no longer need this Capital One card, so I'd
like to close it and get my $2000 deposit back. As this is my oldest card,
should I worry that closing it might hurt my credit score?

+Slidellian Thanks for being patient - we're going to get a video up about this ASAP, but I wanted to let you know that closing your older credit cards will not hurt your score by lowering the average age of your accounts. FICO actually continues to count that account as a positive influence on your credit score. Good behavior will be reported for 10 years after the account is closed, while negative behavior will be reported for 7 years.So, in that department you're in luck. However, as I think you may know, closing a credit card account will decrease your total available credit, and therefore increase your credit utilization ratio. If this happens too much, it can decrease your credit score.But, I believe you mentioned that you keep your utilization down to below 1%, so I'd bet that this wouldn't be a problem for you.Thanks for the question, and well done with the secured credit card!
