Others maybe interested ...If you do not use synthetic oil the sludge will seize and block the oil filter and the tell tail is the oil light on intermediately the finally on completely thats when its too late ... later sludge will effect the cooling pipes and lead to turbo problem

I used a flat head screw driver and carefully pried it loosed. Please be very careful and do this at your own risk. As you can see from other commenters that the chrome piece is somewhat delicate...

Thanks for confirming the synthetic oil part. Lets emphasize on this a bit more as I'm starting to hear more and more that some B5 - A4 owners having sludge issues.

Good video - it worked perfectly. Can not emphasize enough to be as delicate as possible when popping the chrome trim and the grill out of the hood.

Did your A4 ever have a problem with oil sludge? I was thinking of getting one of these cars, but I heard lots of these cars get it.

(not the oil filter) It will clogg up the oil pump will eventually seize through excessive sludge ( this is the turbo model 1.8T)

Actually, I don't, anymore. Today, I found another D3 A8 about 30 miles away from me and made arrangements with the owner to open their hood and actually FEEL how big/little the passenger-side hook is and exactly where it's located, and then I went and bought a Ryobi variable speed reciprocating saw and a 12-inch metal cutting blade. Tomorrow or the next day is "D-Day" (Destruction Day, LOL). I told the owners of the other D3 that they oughta' lube up their hood release mechanism before this disaster happens to them!
