My problem is different,the laptop starts by nothing happens. The power is on and everything but the screen stays black.I do see my mouse pointer and can move it around but nothing else,it doesnt get to the window start up. Would that be a hardware problem?

Nevermind i took out the battery,replugged it and it worked...My fan is still not working but i can manage that little problem.

Thank you!! This worked on a mac that I hadn't been able to turn on in over a year... I was preparing to pull out the hard drive to try and get my files back and tried this as a last-ditch effort. Great trick :)

+Rodney Walker idk. I left my computer on with caffeine. An app that doesn't let computer sleep. And it automatically updated to El Capitan. I noticed it after u helped me reboot so idk. Maybe that caused it to to freeze.

I have macbook pro 2008 a few days ago i had partitioned its disk afterwards it had gone to sleep by itself and now it does not start no display just makes a sound and shutdown by itself

yea all i did was turn off computer take out battery and disconnect power cable then hold the power button for 5 seconds and put back everything like power cable and battery then turn it on hope this helps

the newer ones the battery is inside the computer you have to flip it over and unscrew the screws on the back
